What to expect?
Join us at the 8th London Symposium. This event will be held as two separate meetings on the 19th May and 16th June. You can join for all or a selection of the sessions. As always, relevant topics on recent treatment and management in diabetes will be covered by a panel of national and international experts.
On the 19th May, Professor Richard Bergenstal will share the key findings of the InRange study, the first randomised, controlled trial to use TIR as a primary endpoint to compare the second-generation basal insulin analogues in people with T1DM. News from the international congress - Advanced Technologies & Treatments for Diabetes (ATTD) will be shared by the speakers to keep up to date on how technology and Time-In-Range may improve the management of Diabetes.
In each event you will have the opportunity to ask questions to a panel of diabetes experts. Refreshments will be available at the first event if you attend in person.

This event is for you, if you are a Consultant, a Diabetes Specialist Nurse, a GP with an interest in Diabetes or other HCP in the field in of Diabetes care in the UK and Ireland.

Professor Pratik Choudhary
Professor/Hon Consultant in Diabetes, DRC, Leicester Diabetes Centre - Bloom University of Leicester
Pratik's clinical and academic interests are around Type 1 diabetes and technology, with academic and clinical projects that integrate education, psychology and technology. He has a particular interest in helping embed new technology into clinical practice, to support health care providers as well as people living with diabetes.
Professor Choudhary also holds a position at King's College London, where he has ongoing projects looking at central mechanisms of hypoglycaemia unawareness - using neuroimaging to work out why some people lose the ability to recognise low glucose levels; as well as different strategies including education [like DAFNE plus], psychology [like the HARPdoc programme].
Pratik also led a work-package focused on continuous glucose monitoring within the EU-funded HYPORESOVLE consortium looking at different ways to reduce the impact of hypoglycaemia on people with diabetes. In addition to this, Professor Choudhary is currently chair of the UK Diabetes Technology Network, member of the EASD postgraduate education committee, Associate Editor for Diabetic Medicine and member of the Secretary of State for Transport's Medical Advisory Panel for diabetes. He has worked with several academic and commercial partners on developing studies and products to help bring them to market. -
Dr Miranda Rosenthal
Consultant - Royal Free Hospital
Dr Miranda Rosenthal is a graduate of London University and received her PhD from Kings College Dr Miranda Rosenthal is a graduate of London University and received her PhD from Kings College London Medical School 2003. She completed her training in Diabetes, Endocrinology and General Internal Medicine at Kings College London and St Georges Hospital before starting her consultant career in 2004 at University College London as Senior Lecturer in Clinical Diabetes. In 2009 she joined the Royal Free London NHS Foundations Trust and is Clinical Lead for Islet Transplantation as well as service line lead for Endocrinology. She is the lead for the Camden Diabetes Integrated Practice Unit the first Diabetes Service in England with a value based contract.
Dr Rosenthal has a special interest in the mechanism and treatment of hypoglycaemia in Type 1 diabetes and has extensive experience in the use of continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion and continuous glucose monitoring. Her practice includes work in the management of eating disorders and diabetes, obesity and diabetes, antenatal diabetes and diabetic foot disease. She is interested in the interplay of diabetes and the management of diabetes in those patients with multiple co-morbidities. Her research interests include aetiology of Type 1 diabetes and also treatment of eating disorders in diabetes. She is trustee for DWED. -
Professor Sobha Sivaprasad
Professor and Consultant Ophthalmologist - Moorfields Eye Hospital, London
NIHR Researcher of the Year in 2017, Moorfields’ Innovator of the Year in 2016 and the recipient of the Macula Society’s 2017, Sobha’s 2018 Lancet paper was shortlisted as one of the finalists for the BMJ awards. She is the first Ophthalmologist to receive a Research Council UK funding of £6.3 million for a project that aims to increase research capability and capacity in India and the UK. She has active clinical and laboratory research interests in AMD, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vascular disorders, and runs several clinical trials in these areas while also having over 200 peer-reviewed publications to her credit. Her research mainly focuses on biomarkers and modelling of retinal morphology in retinal diseases, and new therapies for age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and venous occlusive disease. She is also the Editor-in-Chief of Eye. -
Professor Solomon Tesfaye
Consultant Physician/Endocrinologist at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and Honorary Professor of Diabetic Medicine at the University of Sheffield
Solomon Tesfaye is a Consultant Physician/Endocrinologist, and Research Director of Diabetes and Endocrinology for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and the University of Sheffield. He is also Visiting Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Adjunct Professor at Xiangya Hospital Central Southern University, China. His research projects include the epidemiology, risk factors, pathogenesis, central nervous system involvement and treatment of diabetic neuropathy and neuropathic pain. He has published a book, over 200 original articles and reviews in diabetic neuropathy including a landmark study in the NEJM and has an H-Index of 68 (March 2022) on Google Scholar.
Professor Tesfaye was awarded the Prestigious Camillo Golgi Prize of the European Diabetes Association in 2014 for major scientific contributions in Diabetic Neuropathy. He also received the Arnold Bloom Award of Diabetes UK in 2017 for innovative and patient-centered diabetes care. Prof Tesfaye served as Chair the International Expert Group on Diabetic Neuropathy 2010/11; and of NEURODIAB (2006-9) which is the largest diabetic neuropathy scientific group in the world.
He is currently a member of the Diabetes UK Research Steering Group for diabetic complications. He is also the Associate Editor of Experimental Diabetes Research, Frontiers in Endocrinology, European Endocrinology and Diabetes Management and previously of Diabetologia and the Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology. Professor Tesfaye also serves as grant review panel member for the JDRF, US NIH, Diabetes UK, UK NIHR, EFSD, MRC; and has been a member of 3 NICE guideline committees on neuropathic pain management and DPFS panel of the MRC. Finally, he has received several research grants including: 5 project grants from Diabetes UK, JDRF, NIH, EFSD, NIHR and a recent £2.97m UK HTA award to investigate the most effective treatment pathway for painful diabetic neuropathy. -
Professor Luigi Gnudi
Professor of Diabetes and Metabolic Medicine - King's College London
Luigi Gnudi obtained his MD with Honors from Parma University (Italy) in 1988 and completed specialist training in Diabetes and Endocrinology in 1993 (University of Padua, Italy). During 1992-1995 he worked as a postdoctoral fellow with Professor Barbara B Kahn (Harvard Medical School, USA). In 1999, he obtained a PhD in Endocrinological Sciences from Milan University (Italy) and in 2005 he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and the American Society of Nephrology.
Luigi Gnudi is Head of the Unit for Metabolic Medicine, Professor of Diabetes and Metabolic Medicine within the School of Cardiovascular Medicine & Sciences at King’s, and Consultant Physician in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in London.
Luigi Gnudi is subject editor for Nephrology Dialysis and Transplantation, Metabolism, Journal of Endocrinological Investigation, and Diabetologia. He is a member of Diabetes UK, European Association for the Study of Diabetes, American Diabetes Association, American Society of Nephrology, European Diabetic Nephropathy Study Group, Physiological Society, ERA-EDTA, and Faculty 1000.
He speaks frequently at national and international meetings and is an active researcher, clinician, and teacher with major research interests in the study of diabetic nephropathy and diabetic vascular complications in man. He has published more than 100 original papers, books and monographs and meeting proceedings on these topics. -
Dr David Hopkins
Diabetologist, Director, Clinical Academic Lead Diabetes, Endocrinology & Obesity Institute and Network - KCL
Dr Hopkins is a Consultant Physician and Diabetologist. He is Clinical Director for King's diabetes service and Joint Clinical Academic Lead across King's Health Partners. Dr Hopkins leads one of the largest specialist diabetes teams in the UK. He conducts a wide range of specialist diabetes clinics including insulin pump management, diabetic nephropathy, autonomic neuropathy, and gastrointestinal complications of diabetes. He qualified in medicine from Liverpool University and subsequently, trained in diabetes, endocrinology, and internal medicine in Liverpool (1987-1995) and at King's (1995-1999) where he was a clinical academic group lead in 2014. Dr Hopkins was first appointed as a consultant at Central Middlesex Hospital in 1999 before returning to King's as a consultant in 2004. He became Clinical Director of the service in 2010 and Clinical Academic Group Lead in 2014. Dr Hopkins has broad research interests including management of hypoglycaemia, outcomes of structured patient education in Type 1 diabetes and early detection of coronary artery disease in Type 2 diabetes. He has national roles as a member of the Diabetes UK Council of Health Professionals and of the DAFNE executive. He acts as audit and quality assurance lead for the national DAFNE structured education programme.
Dr Hopkins' specialist interests include Type 1 diabetes, Insulin pump treatments, Type 2 diabetes and complications, Diabetic kidney disease, Diabetic neuropathy, gastrointestinal complications of diabetes and Diabetes management following bariatric surgery. -
Dr Michael Feher
Consultant Physician in Diabetes & Clinical Pharmacology, Chelsea & Westminster Hospital - NHSFT
Michael D Feher is Consultant Physician in Diabetes and Clinical Pharmacology at the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, London, and Visiting Professor within Clinical Informatics and Health Outcomes Research Group, Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, University of Oxford.
He has had extensive clinical experience in diabetes, lipids and hypertension, combining clinical pharmacology, pharmaco-epidemiology and laboratory-based research with diabetes clinical care and teaching. His publications include eight books in diabetes and cardiovascular medicine.
He is independent diabetes assessor to London Metropolitan/Home County Police, Committee membership of Heart UK, European Medicines Agency (EASD Diabetes representative and special advisory panel) and Secretary State for Transport Honorary Medical Advisory Panel (DVLA) panel for Driving and Diabetes. He is on the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Diabetes. -
Professor Richard Bergenstal
Executive Director - International Diabetes Centre, Clinical Professor - University of Minnesota
Richard M. Bergenstal, MD, is an endocrinologist and Executive Director of the International Diabetes Centre at Park Nicollet. He is Clinical Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Minnesota and served as President, Science & Medicine of the American Diabetes Association in 2010.
In 2007, Dr Bergenstal was named the ADA’s Outstanding Physician Clinician of the Year and in 2010 he was awarded the Banting Medal for Service for outstanding leadership and service to the American Diabetes Association. Dr Bergenstal received his MD and endocrine training from the University of Chicago where he was an Assistant Professor of Medicine before joining the International Diabetes Centre in 1983. His clinical research has focused on glucose control and diabetes complications and he serves as a Principal Investigator of three NIH trials: the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) in Type 1 diabetes and the Action to Control Cardiovascular Risks in Diabetes (ACCORD) study and the Glycaemic Reduction Approaches in Diabetes: A Comparative Effectiveness Study (GRADE) study in Type 2 diabetes.
Dr Bergenstal's clinical efforts have been directed toward improving systems of care for patients with diabetes by translating new research findings in to practice. He studies the effective utilization of insulin therapy and glucose monitoring (SMBG and CGM) to improve glucose control and clinical outcomes. He teaches nationally and internationally on the importance of patient-centred team care, has been listed in Best Doctors in America since it began in 1992, has published over 100 peer reviewed scientific articles in diabetes and has co-authored the bestselling Betty Crocker Diabetes Cookbook -
Professor Stephanie Amiel
Emeritus Professor of Diabetic Management
Professor Stephanie Amiel is an experimental medicine researcher and a clinical diabetes physician. Stephanie uses multiple methods to investigate clinical problems in diabetes therapies, including hypoglycaemia in insulin therapy, the role of the brain in the control of peripheral metabolism, and the impact of black African ethnicity on the metabolic derangements that lead to Type 2 diabetes. Stephanie works collaboratively with colleagues in neuroimaging, nutrition, psychology and education and transplantation to improve outcomes particularly for adults with Type 1 diabetes. With Sheffield and North Tyneside, and nursing colleagues from King's College Hospital, Stephanie led the King's team in the development of the patient education programme DAFNE, still the only such programme in the UK that is NICE-approved. The team continues to work on improvements to the original curriculum. With the King's Liver teams, a transplantation islet was created at King's for adults with Type 1 diabetes and treatment-resistant hypoglycaemia. Physiological and neuroimaging studies followed by qualitative work with people with diabetes led the team to conclude that cognitive barriers to hypoglycaemia avoidance may contribute to high risk of severe hypoglycaemia during insulin therapy and now a multi-centre RCT of a novel intervention using cognitive approaches for people who struggle to avoid recurrent severe hypoglycaemia in the management of their Type 1 diabetes is being run.
Professor Amiel is a founding member of the International Hypoglycaemia Study Group, which first set out the now widely adopted definitions of hypoglycaemia in diabetes; participated in the development of international guidelines for the use of metabolic surgery in Type 2 diabetes and the use of continuous glucose monitoring in improving diabetes outcomes. She also chaired the NICE guideline development group for the most recent clinical guideline in the diagnosis and management of type 1 diabetes in adults. Stephanie is also chairman of the Strategic Research Advisory Group for Diabetes UK and is part of the EU IMI initiative Hypo RESOLVE, seeking to define hypoglycaemia in terms of its impact on patients' lives. Stephanie is a mentor on the European Federation for the Study of Diabetes (EFSD) research mentorship programme and sits on its panel.
Professor Amiel is currently an Emeritus Professor of Diabetes Medicine.
